The Research programs leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) are offered in the various disciplines. The doctoral program at School of Biology is an intense one, geared towards preparing research scholars for careers both in academia and industry.

Ph.D. programme shall be for a minimum duration of three years, including course work

and a maximum of six years. The women candidates (case by case basis) and Persons with Disability (more than 40% disability) may be allowed a relaxation of two years for Ph.D. in the maximum duration.

Research at School of Biology

The School of Biology at MIT-WPU is a comprehensive academic unit with broader scope that encompasses diverse areas from molecular and cell biology to highly interdisciplinary areas like Biotechnology, Biological engineering, and Nano-biotechnology. Our emphasis is to foster interdisciplinary research and graduate training partnerships in human health, plant science related fields and developing technology in these fields. We believe that providing quality education and research are the foundation to build the next generation of manpower that can make this transformation possible. Our focus is to develop strong research, technology and innovation aptitude with education and research in biological sciences, biotechnology and bioengineering, form linkages with industry, society and engage in society productive activities. We emphasize on problem solving, outcome-based research.

Faculty at School of Biology is actively involved in collaborative, consultancy, funded research and academic projects leading to productive outcomes. The scientific contributions from our faculty members are reflected from their high impact research publications, citations, patents and products they have developed. They come with rich work experience from elite and reputed institutions within India and abroad. Together with their scholars, they conduct active research in frontier areas, which frequently results in highly reputed publications in international and national journals, as well as patents. The majority of the research findings are also presented at international and national conferences. Our faculty have received research grants from prestigious government grant funding agencies like Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Department of Science and Technology (DST), Department of Biotechnology, Govt of India.

Faculty at School of Biology encompass diverse research areas of fundamental & applied biology like molecular microbiology, genomics, cell biology, Plant biotechnology, Proteomics, Nanobiotechnology, Biosensors, Biomimetics, Complexity Biology, Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology, Metabolomics, Biofertilizers, Biocontrol and Integrated Nutrient Management. Advanced interdisciplinary translational research in the areas of Point-of-Care biosensors, diagnostic tools, multiplexed detection methodology, Lab-on-Chip devices, nutraceuticals and bio-actives production holds prominence at School of Biology. We aim to provide students with strong foundation in fundamental principles of biology and also train them for application of these principles in real-life complex problems related to society, health, agriculture and environment.

The research laboratories at SoB are highly equipped with instrumentation facilities and include: Microbial Culture laboratory, Animal Tissue Culture laboratory, Bioanalytical laboratory, Electrochemical Analysis set-up. Industry collaborations (MoUs) and skill development training programs enable the students to be industry-ready professionals with expertise in technical skills.

At the School of Biology, through Ph.D. programme, research-minded students have numerous opportunities to hone their research skills and actively participate in innovative research studies.

Eligibility

  • Candidates for admission to the Ph.D. programme shall have a Master's degree (Life Sciences/Biotechnology/Biochemistry/Microbiology/Botany/Zoology/any domain of Life Sciences) with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC

7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed)

or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational Institution accredited by an Assessment

and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority,

established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority

in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of

educational institutions.

  • A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC.

 

Selection process & Entrance test

SoB is looking for bright and dedicated scholars interested in research to join us as Ph.D. scholars for Academic Year 2022-23. Prospective students satisfying the eligibility criterion are encouraged to apply for Ph.D. Programme on www.mitwpu.edu.in

  • The admission to Ph.D. Program is a two-stage process consisting of a) Entrance Test, b) Personal Interview.
  • The syllabus of the Entrance Test shall consist of 50% of research methodology and 50% shall be subject specific. The Entrance Test shall be conducted at the Centre(s) notified in advance (changes of Centers, if any, also to be notified well in advance). Qualifying marks in Entrance Test shall be 50%; and
  • The interview/viva-voce will be conducted by the school for test qualifying candidates. For the selection of candidates, a weightage of 70% to the entrance test and 30 % to the performance in the interview/Viva-voce shall be given. The candidates are required to discuss their research interest/area through a presentation before a duly constituted RRC.
  • Exemption from Entrance Test: Entrance Test is exempted for those students who qualify UGC-NET (including JRF)/UGC-CSIR NET (including JRF)/SLET/GATE/GPAT/teacher fellowship holder or have passed M.Phil. programme (admitted through entrance test) of any statutory University.
